My edition teeters in at 1273 pages, but some editions go up to 1500 pages. There is no war in “Anna Karenina”, except in Anna's and Levin's souls. I will be reading from the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation, but I have also heard great things about the translation by Anthony Briggs. I have used some of it lately to re-read Tolstoy's splendid WAR AND PEACE which I am convinced is the finest historical novel ever written. Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, who have also translated War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are behind this new version of Boris Pasternak's breathtakingly wonderful novel. With an occasional break, it took me five months to finish the 800 pages of “Anna Karenina”, I probably should have expected not to enjoy “Anna Karenina” very much, because when I read “War and Peace”, I enjoyed the war and was often bored by the peace.
